This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.
Building relates to construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather and site location.
Occupational titles depending on packaging options selected may include:
• Builder
• Construction Supervisor
• Site Manager
• Site Supervisor
• Leading Hand
The qualification is designed to enable two specialised occupational outcome pathways depending on elective options which will be reflected as:
• Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or
• Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Site Management)
Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Builder and Site Supervisor licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.

Education Pathway:
Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) or other higher-level qualifications in the construction and project management fields. These pathways provide further skills for licensing, registration, and managerial roles in the construction industry.
Employment Pathway:
Employment may include, but not be limited to, CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction graduates working as:

• Construction Supervisor

• Contract Administrator
(subject to any builder licensing, registration, or professional recognition requirements in their
respective state, territory, or country).
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/Credit Transfer (CT)
Melbourne College of Business and Technology (MCBT) will offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) to all prospective students through the enrolment process. MCBT has documented policies and procedures for these processes and students are provided details of how to apply for RPL or Credit Transfer through the enrolment process. Students entering this course at MCBT must meet the following entry requirements:
English Language Requirement
Minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent*. For equivalency of various English language proficiency testing and other forms of equivalency, please refer to the student handbook.
OR
A minimum of two (2) years of study at an AQF Level 4 or higher completed in Australia.
Academic Requirement
Satisfactory completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent (for International Students–satisfactory completion of studies in the applicant’s home country equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification is required for entry into all qualifications).
Age Requirement: Students must be a minimum age of 18 years or above at the time of course commencement.
Pre-Enrolment Review
All learners will undertake an initial skills assessment to determine suitability for the course and student needs. The review aims to identify their training needs through questions on previous education or training, the relevance of the course and relevant experience. This pre-enrolment review also aims to identify any support needs and possible RPL or credit transfer opportunities.
Language Literacy Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND)
All students will be required to complete an LLND assessment prior to course enrolment. MCBT uses the LLN robot platform for the assessment. All reports, training supplements and recommendations are generated by the LLN Robot system after comparing the learner’s ACSF spiky profile with the profile of this course.
Hardware/Software requirements
For students to work on assessments, tasks and self-study, all learners are expected to have access to a laptop or computer with a Windows operating system and an office application like Microsoft Word at their own cost. Where needed, MCBT will provide access to computers/laptops with appropriate configurations for students to complete their studies at the campus.
